Most custom plate frames, including our GMC range, are designed to fit around the existing plate without drilling into the vehicle. This guide walks through the general process so you know what to expect before your frame arrives.
Before You Start
Confirm you have the correct frame for your exact GMC model and trim before fitting, since a frame built for one model's plate recess will not sit correctly on another. If you ordered based on our sizing guide, double-check the frame against your plate before starting installation.
What You Will Typically Need
Fitting a drill-free plate frame generally involves removing the existing plate, cleaning the area behind it, positioning the frame, and refitting the plate through the frame using the vehicle's original fixings. Exact steps can vary slightly by model, so if anything about your specific GMC's plate mount is unclear, our team can talk you through it before you begin.
General Fitting Steps
1. Remove the Existing Plate
Unscrew or unclip the current plate using the vehicle's original fixings, keeping the screws or clips aside since most frames reuse them.
2. Clean the Plate Recess
Wipe down the area behind the plate to remove dust or residue, giving the frame a clean surface to sit against.
3. Position the Frame
Line up the frame within the plate recess, checking that it sits evenly on all sides before securing anything.
4. Refit the Plate Through the Frame
Place the plate back through the frame and refit it using the original screws or clips, checking that both the plate and frame are seated flush against the vehicle.
5. Check the Fit
Once fitted, check the frame from a few steps back to confirm it sits level and flush, and that no part of the registration plate is obscured.
Common Fitting Mistakes
The most common issue is ordering a frame for the wrong model or trim, which can leave gaps around the edge even if the frame is otherwise well made. Rushing the cleaning step can also leave the frame sitting slightly proud of the surface. Taking a few extra minutes at each step generally avoids both problems.
