Name Stickers, Iron-On Labels or Marker Pens: What Actually Keeps School Items From Getting Lost

Name Stickers, Iron-On Labels or Marker Pens: What Actually Keeps School Items From Getting Lost

Parents and nursery staff generally reach for one of three methods to stop books, bottles and uniforms going missing: peel-and-stick name stickers, iron-on fabric labels, or simply writing a name with a permanent marker. Each has genuine strengths and weaknesses depending on the surface, so this is a practical comparison rather than a pitch for one product.

Permanent Marker

Writing a name directly onto a hard surface is free and instant, which is why it's still common. The downside is consistency and durability: handwriting varies, marker ink fades or smudges with washing and repeated handling, and it looks noticeably less tidy than a printed label, particularly on light-coloured items where ink can bleed.

Iron-On Fabric Labels

Iron-on labels are the standard choice for uniforms, PE kit and other fabric items, since they're applied with heat directly into the fabric and hold up to regular washing. They're not designed for hard, non-fabric surfaces like water bottles or lunch boxes, which is where a different approach is usually needed.

Peel-and-Stick Name Stickers

For hard surfaces, waterproof peel-and-stick stickers are generally the most durable and tidiest option. Our custom school name stickers are designed for exactly this: books, water bottles, lunch boxes, pencil cases and similar items, printed with a child's name rather than handwritten, and built to handle washing and daily use. They're a peel-and-stick product, so for soft fabric items like uniforms, an iron-on label is usually still the better physical fit.

Choosing by Item, Not by Habit

The most reliable approach for most families is matching the method to the surface rather than picking one method for everything: iron-on labels for uniforms and soft fabric items, waterproof stickers for books, bottles, boxes and other hard surfaces, and marker as a fallback only where a proper label isn't practical, such as small odd-shaped items.

For Nurseries Ordering in Bulk

If a nursery is organising labels for a whole class rather than individual parents ordering separately, working from one class list keeps names spelled correctly and consistent across every child's set. See our guide to submitting a class list for how this works for a bulk order.
