Preparing Artwork for Showroom Signage and Plate Frames: A Dealership Checklist
Most delays in producing showroom signage don't come from production — they come from artwork that isn't ready. This checklist covers what to prepare before you brief a signage or plate frame order, so proofing and production move faster. It pairs with our Car Dealership & Showroom Printing Package.
Get Your Logo Into a Usable Format
Large-format signage — a storefront fascia, a window graphic, an A-frame sign — needs a vector logo file (AI, EPS, or a high-resolution PDF), not a JPEG or PNG pulled from a website or a screenshot. A logo that looks fine on a business card can become visibly pixelated or blurry when scaled up to signage size. If a vector file doesn't exist, it can usually be recreated from a clear reference image, but flag this early since it adds a step before production.
Lock Down Your Brand Colours
If you have exact colour values — Pantone, CMYK, or hex codes — provide them rather than a colour sample or "it's roughly this blue." Colour can shift noticeably between different materials (vinyl, acrylic, fabric banners) if it's matched by eye rather than by value, and a showroom with slightly different blues across its window graphics, cards and plate frames looks inconsistent even if no single piece is wrong on its own.
Franchise Showrooms: Check Brand Guidelines First
If you operate under a manufacturer franchise agreement, most brands issue specific guidelines for logo minimum size, clear space, approved colour combinations, and sometimes even approved fonts. Review these before finalising any exterior signage or plate frame artwork — catching a guideline conflict after production means redoing the piece.
Measure Before You Design
For physical signage — window panes, fascia length, A-frame placement, banner locations — take rough measurements of the space before finalising layout. A design that looks balanced on screen can look cramped or oddly proportioned once it's sized to an actual window or storefront. If you're not sure of exact dimensions, provide your best estimate and flag that it needs confirming on-site.
Decide What's Permanent vs What Changes
Separate your artwork briefs into two categories: fixed branding (storefront identity, core signage) that should stay consistent for years, and changeable content (promotions, seasonal banners, model highlights) that will be swapped out regularly. Designing changeable content with the same rigidity as permanent signage usually means unnecessary reprints later — build in flexibility from the start (for example, a banner template that can be updated with new promotions or model names without a full redesign).
A Quick Pre-Order Checklist
- Vector logo file (not a low-resolution image)
- Exact brand colour values, if available
- Franchise brand guidelines, if applicable
- Rough measurements for each physical location (window, fascia, A-frame spot)
- A note on which items are permanent vs seasonal/promotional
