What to Print Before Opening a Car Workshop in Dubai: A Signage and Stationery Checklist

New workshop owners tend to think about the big-ticket items first – lifts, tools, staff – and leave signage and stationery until the week before opening. It works better the other way around, since some of these items take longer to produce than people expect. Here's a practical order to work through.

1. Confirm your trade name matches your licence

Before ordering any signboard, check that the exact wording you want on your sign matches the trade name on your DED (or free zone) licence. Mismatches between licence name and signboard wording are a common reason signage gets rejected at the approval stage, so it's worth confirming this first rather than after the sign is made.

2. Order entrance and storefront signage

Your A-frame sign and any window or wall vinyl for the storefront should go first, since these are usually what customers use to confirm they've found the right place. Production and any landlord or municipality sign-off can take longer than people expect, so build in lead time here.

3. Add safety and compliance signage for the bay area

Once the layout of your workshop bay is finalised, order safety signage for hazard areas, PPE requirements and fire points. This is typically checked during inspection, so it's worth having in place before you open rather than adding it reactively.

4. Set up staff ID

ID cards or name badges for technicians and front-desk staff are worth ordering once your team is confirmed, since they typically need names and (for ID cards) photos.

5. Order job cards and invoice books

Carbonless invoice books or job cards are usually the last item, since you'll want your final branding and any legal or VAT details confirmed before printing a large batch.

A note on lead time

Rigid signage and multi-part carbonless books generally take longer to produce than stickers or ID cards, so if you're working to a fixed opening date, get quotes and confirm turnaround for the slower items first.
