Define the categories first
Write the event categories and the number of recipients in each. For a race, this may include separate age groups or distances. A school event may have individual and team awards. Work out those counts before dividing the order into finishes.
Compare the complete medal
Finish is only one part of the choice. Check the medal model, design area, ribbon arrangement and whether names or results change between pieces. Gold, silver and bronze are finish descriptions here, not a statement that the medals contain those precious metals.
Make the allocation easy
Give the supplier quantities by finish and category, then check the total against your event list. Decide whether you need spare medals and whether those should have generic wording. Ask how the finished medals will be grouped for handover so organisers can distribute them correctly.
