Embossing Seal Orientation: Why the Paper Edge Matters

Embossing Seal Orientation: Why the Paper Edge Matters

Tell the maker which edge of the paper enters the embosser. The same design can end up sideways or upside down if its orientation does not match the intended position.

Mark the position on a sample

Use a blank copy of the actual sheet or certificate. Draw a circle or box where the impression should sit and mark the top of the design. This is clearer than asking for a bottom or side orientation without a diagram.

Measure the reach needed

Measure from the nearest paper edge to the centre of the planned mark. Compare that distance with the reach of the proposed embosser. A design that fits the die can still be impossible to place if the tool cannot reach far enough onto the sheet.

Show portrait and landscape use separately

If you want to use the seal on several document layouts, send an example of each. Check whether one orientation works for all of them. Do not rotate a document in your imagination and assume the impression will remain the right way up.

Confirm the proof with the paper sample

Approve the wording, image direction, placement and paper suitability together. Keep the marked sample with the order record. Before embossing an important document, make a test on matching spare paper and check which side carries the raised impression.
