Choose matte or gloss for the look, then check writing compatibility separately. A finish name alone does not tell you whether a pen or overprinter will work.
View the finish with the package
Compare a sample beside the actual box, bag or jar. Gloss can reflect light; matte changes the way the surface appears. Check small lettering and any barcode under the lighting where the product will be handled. Colours seen on a screen are not a substitute for checking a printed sample when the match is important.
Reserve space for later information
If staff will add a date, batch reference or price, mark that area in the artwork. Tell the printer which pen, stamp or device will add it. Coatings and laminates can affect writing and drying. Test the intended method before approving a full run, including whether the mark rubs off during handling.
Confirm the whole specification
Include size, shape, quantity, material, finish and supply format in the brief. If you are reordering, send the approved artwork and identify any changes. A change to finish can affect the look and the later marking process even when the printed design stays the same.
