How to Measure a Bottle for a Printed Label

How to Measure a Bottle for a Printed Label

Bottle Label Printing

Measure the straight area available for the label, then test a paper outline on the bottle. Bottle capacity does not determine label dimensions.

Find the label area

Look for shoulders, a curved base, ribs and moulded seams. Measure the height of the usable straight section. For the width, wrap a paper strip around that section and mark the desired coverage. Record the measurements in millimetres and photograph the marked bottle.

Check taper and closure

A label that fits a cylindrical area may wrinkle on a tapered bottle. Try the paper outline at the intended position and check whether both edges sit flat. For a wraparound design, decide whether the ends should meet, overlap or leave a gap. Confirm the final allowance with the printer instead of assuming a universal overlap.

Approve fit with the content

Place the actual artwork on the outline and check the product name, smaller information and barcode position. Give each bottle shape its own dimensions. Share a physical sample if the shape is difficult to describe, and include storage conditions so the material can be checked along with the fit.
