Inside and Outside Box Dimensions: Avoiding Ordering Mix-ups

Corrugated Box Printing

Inside box dimensions describe the usable space for the contents. Outside dimensions describe the overall packed box. Label them clearly because they answer different ordering questions.

Use inside dimensions for product fit

Measure or confirm the internal length, width and height of an assembled box. State the units and identify the opening. The FEFCO case code uses internal dimensions in millimetres, expressed as length × width × height. If you are supplying product measurements instead, label them as product dimensions.

Use outside dimensions for storage and transport

The overall box size matters when it must fit a shelf, an outer carton or a transport arrangement. Board thickness and construction affect the relationship between inside and outside dimensions. Do not convert one to the other with a guessed allowance; ask the printer to confirm both when both are important.

Confirm the same dimensions on the quote

Mark your measurement points on a photo or drawing and keep the units consistent. Include any internal packing or dividers in the brief. Before approving production, compare the quoted specification with a sample containing the actual products. This also reveals loading or removal problems that measurements alone may miss.
