- Choose mainland or free zone. A mainland licence from the Department of Economy and Tourism suits companies wanting to trade freely across the UAE; a free zone such as JAFZA offers benefits like proximity to port/terminal access, but with its own setup process and timeline.
- Register the correct activity codes. Freight forwarding and customs brokerage are typically separate activity codes — confirm which you need (forwarding, brokerage, or both) with your licensing authority, since offering customs clearance without the correct broker approval isn't simply a formality.
- Customs broker approval, where applicable, is a separate step from the general trade licence and may involve its own application with the relevant customs or immigration authority.
- Any required financial guarantee — some clearing and forwarding activities require a bank guarantee or deposit with customs or the free zone; confirm the current requirement and amount directly, as this is not something to estimate.
- Dubai Trade Portal registration, once your trade licence is issued, to actually file declarations and manage shipments.
What to print before you open
